When adding a page in Page Designer, a best practice is to create it in your base
language, typically default. When you create the page, a variation of the page is added for
each locale in the fallback hierarchy defined in Business Manager. You can then use the page
variations to localize components for each locale as needed.
For example, if you create a page in the default locale, and the fallback hierarchy
for Canadian French is fr_CA > fr > default, page variations for fr_CA and fr are also
created. For each of these page variations, you can localize content at the component level,
or you can let the content for a component display according to the fallback hierarchy. If
you provide localized Canadian French text or images for a component on the Canadian French
(fr_CA) page variation, that content is displayed on the Canadian French page. If you don't
provide localized content for the Canadian French page, the page uses the contents of the
component in the next locale in the fallback hierarchy, which in this case is the French
(fr) page variation. If the component is not localized on the French page, the component
displays the contents of the component in the next locale in the fallback hierarchy, in
this case, the default locale.
If you provide localized content for a component, you
can use the Revert to Fallback option to delete the localized component and instead use the
content from the fallback hierarchy.
When you initially configure a page, all locale page
variations use the text from the locale in which you set up the page (typically default)
for fields on the SEO and Localization tabs in the Page Settings window. If you want to
use localized text for those fields, go the locale page variation and enter the localized
text. However, be aware that as soon as you click Save after entering the localized text
on either the SEO or Localization tab, you break the connection to the fallback text for
all text on both tabs. There is no Revert to Fallback option for SEO or Localization
fields on locale page variations.
