Commerce Cloud Data in Tableau

You can use your Commerce Cloud data in Tableau to create dashboards and data views that are designed for how you do business. The Commerce Cloud Tableau Connector exports your Commerce Cloud analytics data to your Tableau instance. You can use Tableau’s data visualization features to analyze your data without code.

Note: Tableau offers a multitude of options and resources to visualize your data. We recommend taking advantage of the training resources available with your Tableau license to learn more about how to build, refine, and share your data visualizations with Tableau. For technical details and help with Tableau, refer to the Tableau documentation.

Common Data Terms

o get started using Commerce Cloud data in Tableau, get familiar with some of the common data terminology used in Commerce Cloud and Tableau.

  • Role–A set of properties assigned to a field in Tableau.
    • Dimension–A qualitative field used to segment and expose the details in your data. For example, you can group the measure GMV by the dimensions customer type and date. The value of a measure depends on the context of the dimensions.
    • Measure–A quantitative field used to show metrics or numerical data. A measure is commonly considered a dependent property because the meaning of a measure depends on which dimensions are selected in Tableau, and its value depends on the context of the dimensions. Tableau refers to the meaning of a measure as granularity.

Commerce Cloud measures are either fully additive or semi-additive. A fully additive measure can be summed for dimensions used with the measure. Examples of aggregation functions that you can apply include sum, count, and average.

A semi-additive measure is the result of a mathematical calculation or aggregation. It’s summable in some cases, but the sums can differ depending on the included dimensions.

  • Aggregate–How data is combined. The amount of data aggregation in a Tableau chart affects how you evaluate the data and the discoveries that you can make. Aggregating semi-additive measures can generate erroneous results.

Commerce Cloud Data Aggregations

The Commerce Cloud Tableau Connector is a web data connector that groups your Commerce Cloud data in subject areas. Each subject area consists of dimensions and measures derived from raw Commerce Cloud data.

When you import your Commerce Cloud data into Tableau, the connector applies the appropriate aggregation function to represent your data in Tableau. You can create meaningful data views by further aggregating your measures with the imported dimensions.

A data dashboard is a convenient way to display data from the same underlying subject area in easy-to-read charts and tables. Each element of a dashboard depends on a different aggregation of your data.
