Jobs

Jobs automate routine tasks or long-running processes, such as importing and exporting data, replicating data or code, or building a search index. Jobs can use out-of-the-box system steps, or a developer can create custom job steps. You can run jobs manually as needed or schedule them to run at a specific time or on a recurring basis.

Scheduling of custom jobs is disabled on sandbox instances. There is a blue information banner on the “Jobs” page and on the job details “Scheduling and History” tab of a specific job. System jobs, for example sitemap generation, search index rebuilding, and the like are not affected.

  • Legacy Jobs
    We recommend that you use the new job framework to create and manage jobs, but the legacy, deprecated functionality is also available in Business Manager.
  • Pipelet to Script Method or Job Step Conversion
    Some pipelets have a script method or job step equivalent. We recommend using the script method or job step instead of the pipelet. Any pipelet can be called directly from a controller.
  • Job Flows
    A flow controls the sequence in which job steps are executed. Every job must contain at least one flow. Each flow must contain at least one step. You can configure sequential flows, which execute one after the other. You can also configure sibling flows, which execute in parallel. You can combine sequential and parallel flows in a job. For example, sibling parallel flows download catalog files, followed by a sequential flow that imports catalog files, followed by another set of sibling parallel flows that download price files, followed by another sequential flow that imports the price files. The job could finish with a sequential flow that reindexes and replicates to production.
  • Job Flow Scope
    Each flow has a scope, either the entire organization, all storefront sites, specific storefront sites, or sites that you pass to the job at execution time using the OCAPI data API. Some job steps, such as CreateSitemap, can execute only in the context of a site. Other job steps, such as ExecuteDataReplication, can execute only in the context of the organization. If you try to assign a job step to a flow that has a scope the step doesn't support, the step shows an error.
  • Job Steps
    A job step tells the job what to do. Each job flow must contain at least one step. The job framework includes some out-of-the box system job steps that require no coding for common processes. If there is no system step that does what you want to do, a developer must create a custom job step.

    Use Business Manager to create a job. We recommend that you use the new job framework to create jobs, but the legacy, deprecated functionality is also available in Business Manager.
  • Run a Job Manually
    You can execute a job manually as needed.
  • Managing Jobs
    After jobs are created, use Business Manger to manage them.
