I’ve said this before to colleagues, friends, my team:
💡 "With this technology, you have total freedom."

And today’s story?
It’s proof of that.

A real project. A real company. 𝘈 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭... 𝘮𝘦𝘴𝘴?
I once worked on a multi-brand, multi-language project.
A big one.

It looked like any normal B2C Commerce Cloud store:
✔ Products
✔ Filters & refinements
✔ All the usual catalog features

Except for one thing.
🚨 𝗡𝗼 𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗰𝗸𝗼𝘂𝘁.

Yes, you read that right.

A Commerce Cloud store… that didn’t sell directly.

𝗦𝗼, 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁?

Instead of letting customers buy, we built a custom system (I think we used custom objects 🤔) that told users where they could buy the products.

Basically, it worked like a B2B directory.

The company wasn’t selling to customers.
They sold to other businesses, which then sold to consumers.

So, when users added a product to their cart…
Instead of a checkout, they got a list of retailers where they could buy it.

𝘋𝘰𝘦𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘮𝘢𝘬𝘦 𝘴𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘦?

At first, I thought:

💭 "𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗹 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘄𝗲 𝗱𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗲 𝗖𝗹𝗼𝘂𝗱?"

Because let’s be honest…

There were easier, cheaper, faster ways to build this.

But then I looked deeper.

And I saw that this client was already using Salesforce CRM, Service Cloud and Marketing Cloud.

So, in their minds, it made sense to add Commerce Cloud to the mix.

They had heavy Marketing Cloud integrations to capture leads.
They even used Service Cloud for product-related issues.
So, yeah…

𝗜𝘁 𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗮 𝗺𝗮𝗱𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗲.

But still, if we had built this with another technology?
🚀 It would have been much easier to maintain.
